As Florida Gateway College Nursing students prepare for exams and look forward to graduation in May, many already have the next step in their careers secured.

On Wednesday, FGC’s Nursing and Career Services departments partnered with Lake City Medical Center to hold an information and recruitment event in the college’s Medical Technology Building. Nearly 50 ASDN (Associate of Science in Nursing) students attended the event where they had the opportunity to see presentations from LCMC staff, ask questions about the hospital’s various departments, and interview with hiring managers. Sessions were held on LCMC’s Emergency Room, ICU, and Medical-Surgical departments.

Nine soon-to-be FGC graduates received immediate job offers at the event. Attendees also heard directly from Rick Naegler, CEO of Lake City Medical Center, who himself has a background as a registered nurse.

“I’ve worked in big cities and small cities, and this nursing program, what you have afforded to you, is a diamond in the rough” Naegler said of FGC Nursing. “We want to continue that partnership for you guys as we move forward.” LCMC is seeing tremendous growth, Naegler told the students, with job openings doubling over the last few months as the hospital adds floors and increases capacity. “If you’re going to stay in the community and want to be a part of the community, we want to be a home to you.”

This event isn’t the only way FGC Nursing is connecting its students with employers. Virtual recruiting events with LCMC, UF Health, VA, The Rehabilitation Center of Lake City, and North Florida Regional Medical Center have all been held in recent weeks. Centurion Health will be recruiting during FGC’s Career Day on April 7.

The interest shown by these and other healthcare providers demonstrates that FGC Nurses are in demand locally and across the region. FGC prides itself on providing affordable education of the highest quality, and events with local employers like LCMC are a part of our mission to keep our most talented new professionals in the community. The healthcare industry is more important now than ever, and having highly trained, dedicated nurses serving the local population is crucial to the health, growth, and prosperity of Lake City and its surrounding communities.
