Students in Florida Gateway College’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Program receive one-on-one training in a newly acquired tractor-trailer.

“Recently, we faced a challenge where one of our two training trucks went down,” said Kris Brady, Executive Director of Workforce, Public Service, and Technology. “We needed another truck to ensure that training continued unobstructed. We contacted one of our industry partners, Werner Enterprises, and explained the situation.”

Werner Enterprises helped locate an appropriate truck in their fleet, a 2017 Freightliner, that had already been modified for student training.

“They offered to sell it to us at an incredible discount and to ship it from Omaha to Lake City,” said Brady.

After delivery, Werner’s technicians inspected the truck, made minor repairs, and ensured the vehicle was in great shape before turning it over to the CDL program at FGC’s Olustee Campus.

The purchase was also made possible by state funding through the PIPELINE (Prepping Institutions, Programs, Employers, and Learners through Incentives for Nursing Education) Fund program, which grants funds based on performance in nursing education programs. In 2022, FGC received $1,891,058 based on the success of FGC nursing programs. FGC will use these funds to support a broad range of programs.

Because of the support from generous industry partners like Werner Enterprises and the work of dedicated staff and faculty, FGC students continue to have access to top-tier educational equipment and facilities as they complete their programs and pursue their careers.
