LAKE CITY, Fla. – The Florida Gateway College Brain Bowl Team has garnered multiple accomplishments this season on the state and national stages.

FGC sophomore Keilley Sweat was named the January Brain Bowl Student of the Month by the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) for her leadership and dedication to the team’s success. Most recently, she helped FGC finish 10th in the nation among 24 teams from across the country in the 2024 Community College National Championship Tournament held February 23-24. Keilley herself placed 15th individually out of 108 competitors.

The team’s coach, FGC physics professor James Givvines, was recently named to the FCSAA Hall of Fame Class of 2023-2024 for his years of Brain Bowl coaching and mentorship at FGC. James rebuilt the college’s team after it lay dormant for eight years and has served as coach for 15 years. In that time, he has led FGC to nine state championships and seven national championships with a career high of finishing eighth in the nation. In 2014, he was awarded Coach of the Year.

The FGC Brain Bowl Team’s next challenge will be the FCSAA 2024 Brain Bowl State Championship. The state tournament will take place March 22-23 at Santa Fe College in Gainesville.
