FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LAKE CITY, Fla. – Florida Gateway College has accepted an $860,000 grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to develop a program in Diesel Mechanic Technology. The grant, part of the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund, will enable FGC to develop a program based on the Florida Department of Education Curriculum of Frameworks and local industry support.

The grant will allow the college to renovate existing underutilized facility space on campus to offer this program. In addition, the grant will allow for the college to buy equipment and also hire a faculty/coordinator to create the program. FGC will also be asking for donations to help offset costs of this program.

“With FGC’s ideal location near I-75 and I-10 and with the expansion and creation of additional trucking companies locally, this opportunity to train technicians is an important work force initiative for the entire North Florida Region,” stated Dr. Lawrence Barrett, FGC President.

The Diesel Systems Technician Career Certificate program will take 18 months to complete and anticipates that it will enroll its first class in Fall 2021.
