LAKE CITY, Fla. – Florida Gateway College is offering new educational tracks for candidates seeking to obtain or renew their teacher certifications in the State of Florida.

The new alternative certification track allows candidates who hold temporary teaching certificates to enroll in the specific courses needed to satisfy their certification requirements. Teachers needing to renew certification may also take advantage of these new options, taking just the courses they need.

By tailoring the curriculum to each candidate’s individual needs, FGC is streamlining the teacher certification process, reducing obstacles, and placing qualified teachers in the community’s classrooms.

“I am excited to be able to serve the teaching community with the new alternative certification pathway,” said Pam Carswell, FGC Associate Dean of Teacher Preparation Programs. “The new pathway is designed for teachers who are teaching in a public school with a temporary certificate and allows them to choose classes based on their specific FLDOE requirements.”

Beginning in Spring 2024, a stand-alone reading endorsement program will allow teachers to add a full Florida state-approved reading endorsement to their certification by taking three courses (nine credit hours) over two semesters.

Educator Preparation Institute Program

FGC’s Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) Program is a college credit certificate program designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and who wish to enter the field of teaching. Flexible options including in-person, online, and hybrid course availability make the EPI ideal for those seeking a new career in the rewarding profession of PreK-12 education.

Graduates will finish the program with a Florida Professional Educator Certificate with a reading endorsement.

The 24-credit-hour program takes three semesters to complete. Courses in disciplines including learning theory, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), and teaching reading will provide candidates with a deep understanding of the important concepts, methods, and practices of teaching.
