LAKE CITY, Fla. – On Thursday, September 15, Florida Gateway College will celebrate the outstanding performance of the student anglers of FGC’s Bass Fishing Team. Three teams of anglers competed in the Strike King Bassmaster College National Championship held Sept. 2-4 in Winyah Bay, South Carolina.

The duo of Seth Slanker and Jackson Swisher finished the tournament No. 2 in the nation, catching a three-day total of 37 pounds, 13 ounces, just two pounds, five ounces behind the first-place team. All three FGC teams finished in the Top 25 in the 120-team competition.

“I’m super excited for Florida Gateway College, the anglers, and all the sponsors,” said Coach Glenn Cale on the team’s latest achievement. “Without the support of everyone, this does not happen. Our anglers are among the best in the country, and they are showing everyone they can compete against the best.”

The community is invited to gather on the campus of FGC on Thursday at 11:15 a.m. for a celebration and parade from the college entrance to Building 1 in honor of these student anglers and their success on the water.

“It’s such an honor to represent Florida Gateway College in the national championship,” said Swisher. “It has been a super cool experience fishing with and against the best guys in the country. I can’t put into words how It feels to be the 2nd-best team in the country. I am excited to be fishing the classic bracket coming up at the beginning of next month. I would just like to thank everyone of our sponsors and all the staff at Florida Gateway College for making this possible.”

“Leaving the national championship as runner-up has opened so many incredible opportunities for us already and I am beyond thankful,” said Slanker. “First place would have been a bit sweeter, but I truly think we gave it our all, and we did the best we could fishing in out-of-state waters against 120 of the best teams in the nation. The love and support from our community and our sponsors continue to push and motivate us for the next steps towards our futures.”

Slanker and Swisher will next join six other college anglers from around the country in the Bassmaster College Classic Bracket Oct. 1-3 airing live on FOX Sports 1. There they will face each other in individual competition, with the bracket winner earning a spot in the 2023 Bassmaster Classic.
