LAKE CITY, Fla. – Florida Gateway College Athletics has selected Dr. Edward Morse to be the head coach of the college’s Men’s Cross Country Team.

Morse has been an assistant coach for FGC’s Women’s Cross Country Team since 2018 and has been coaching male and female runners for more than 15 years.

“I’ve been running for many years, coaching a lot of runners, and I really like to pass on to runners the things that I have learned that would’ve made me a better runner earlier on in my life,” said Morse. “I am really looking forward to being part of the running program again at Florida Gateway College and look forward to a lot of success if we can pull from the natural talent in the area.”

Morse’s experience includes serving as assistant coach for Columbia County Eye of the Tiger AAU Running Team from 2007 to 2013(state XC champs 2011, 2012, runner up 2013), coaching running for Nike’s US Sports Camps from 2009 to 2018 and again in 2022, and serving as Assistant Coach for Distance for both boys’ and girls’ cross country and track teams at Columbia High School from 2013 to 2017.

“We are really excited that Ed will be our new head men’s cross country coach,” said Athletic Director Chris Hackett. “He is highly regarded within the running community in this area, and he has been instrumental in the success of our women’s cross country program since it returned.”

Morse has deep roots in the local community and at the college. He is the third of seven children, all of whom attended FGC (then Lake City Community College) with two of his brothers having played basketball for the college. Morse studied Microbiology and Genetics at the University of North Florida, earned his Doctor of Medical Dentistry Degree from the University of Florida College of Dentistry, and has provided dental services for the US Navy Reserves and Florida Department of Corrections, among others.

FGC Men’s Cross Country was announced to be returning to FGC earlier this year after 45 years. The sport was previously a part of the college’s athletic programs from 1964 to 1977. With its return in 2023, it will bring the full slate of FGC intercollegiate sports teams to six, joining men’s basketball, women’s cross country, coed esports, women’s flag football, and women’s softball (starting in the 23-24 season).
