Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865, and FGC’s celebration will focus on the theme of “Overcoming Adversity.” The event will feature the Mosso-Kan West African Dance & Drum Ensemble performing traditional choreography and highlighting West African heritage. Retired Fire Chief Al Wilson will serve as guest speaker. “Juneteenth is an important holiday not just to African Americans, but to all Americans,” said Travis George, FGC Director of Multicultural Affairs and Special Projects. “It is a time that the citizens of this country agreed that slavery was cruel and needed to be abolished. Therefore, we are celebrating a union not just of Blacks but of all races, ethnicities, and cultures.” The community is invited to join FGC as we observe this important celebration of heritage, history, and freedom.
