LAKE CITY, Fla. – Florida Gateway College student Elisabeth Garcia-Gijon has advanced to the 2026 HOSA International Leadership Conference. After progressing through regionals and earning second place in Pathophysiology at April’s state competition, she will now represent FGC and the state of Florida at the international competition, June 17-20, 2026, in Indianapolis.
“From a young age, I always knew I had a passion for the medical field, but I was uncertain about what career path to follow,” Garcia-Gijon said. “HOSA has helped me discover who I want to be by introducing me to healthcare professionals, organizations, and other students who have inspired me to follow my dreams, even when I was unsure.”
Garcia-Gijon has been an active member of HOSA–Future Health Professionals since 2022 and serves as Vice President of FGC’s chapter. HOSA is a career and technical student-led organization that supports those interested in healthcare careers by offering educational opportunities, leadership development, and hands-on experiences.
HOSA’s Competitive Events Program motivates members to improve their knowledge and skills, recognizing excellence achieved through education, training, and dedicated preparation. Elisabeth’s chosen area of focus, Pathophysiology, studies how the body’s physiological processes are affected by disease and injury. The event consists of a 50-question written test assessing the student’s knowledge of anatomy and physiology, human disease, and impact on the health community.
“This event has helped inspire me to become a registered nurse,” Garcia-Gijon said. “I want to be able to help others no matter what they might be going through. One day, I even dream of becoming a health science teacher to inspire others to become future healthcare leaders.”
Garcia-Gijon graduated this Spring with an Associate in Arts degree and plans to apply to FGC’s nursing program in the Fall.
“Elisabeth has gone above and beyond expectations, placing FGC HOSA in the spotlight,” said Jessica Crews, FGC HOSA sponsor and Assistant Professor of Nursing & Health Sciences. “Her commitment and perseverance led her to the international competition, and I couldn’t be more proud.”
