Programs

Peers on Path: Diverse Student Initiative
This program supports underserved and underprivileged students in achieving their goals at FGC and beyond by providing them with social and academic enrichment that includes mentorship, peer support and accountability, and civic engagement. The initiative fosters inclusion, diversity, equity and advocacy among students, encouraging them to stay the course with their peers and complete an Associate’s degree through a rewarding educational journey.

How to join
  • Peers on Path (POP) cohort-based program (take classes with same group of peers) begins each Fall semester, with sign up occurring during the preceding Spring and Summer semesters. Apply to FGC for your Fall semester of interest and notify Travis George, Director of Multi-Cultural Affairs, of your interest in Peers on Path by emailing travis.george@fgc.edu. If you’re unable to fully participate in the cohort model due to your program of interest or scheduling conflict, we still want you to join and engage in our Cultures in Action Club. This club engages in many of the same extracurricular activities as Peers on Path.
peers on path shared in-person classes
  • In the fall semester of your first year, you will engage in at least three classes dedicated to POP students that meet the general education requirements of your Associate in Arts degree. Depending on each student’s area of interest and transfer goals, different elective courses and specific math/science courses will be required that make up your unique pathway. As your advisors assists you with planning your individualized schedule, POP classes will be available for your most commonly needed courses. For example, in Fall Semester 1, your SLS 1101, Intro to College, ENC 1101, Freshman Composition, and MAT 1033, Intermediate Algebra, will consist of just POP students and will meet on campus. You may take an additional class, which will consist of elective and/or general education courses that fit your unique educational plan, and will be selected from the schedule available to all students. You will continue in the Spring semester with three more POP classes. As you progress to your second year, you will continue to engage with your peers outside of the classroom and mentor incoming POP students.
workshops
  • Peers on Path students will have exclusive access to various student support and life skills workshops in order to further develop success strategies. These workshops will be facilitated by faculty, staff, and community volunteers for each specialty area. Some examples of Workshops may include: Study Skills/Test Taking, Time management, Personal finance management/Financial Literacy, Campus Life, Education and Career planning, Student Involvement
university visits
  • Students will participate in university visits and attend transfer fairs to help determine which transfer university they would like to attend. These visits will happen multiple times throughout their FGC journey.
philanthropy
  • This program will conduct philanthropy events with contributions going to local organizations that support different aspects of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy. Each year, the students will determine which organizations to contribute to as a group.
COmmunity contributions
  • Another important foundation of this program is the responsibility to take the knowledge learned in the program to return back to the local community. This is done through educationally based events and community service initiatives.
