College administrators began working on an application to the State Department of Education in 2018.  They then appeared before the full State Board of Education in November of last year to answer any questions about the new program application. The official correspondence confirming full DOE approval for the program to lead to certification was received on June 25.

“For several years now the five school superintendents in the Florida Gateway College district advised me of a shortage of elementary teachers,” said Dr. Lawrence Barrett, President of Florida Gateway College. “We hope this new degree program will allow students to complete a degree without having to leave the area and then find employment in our North Florida community.”
