February 12, 2021 Florida Gateway College Celebrates Black History Share Share this post Twitter Facebook eMail Copy URL Copy February is recognized nationally as Black History Month, and Florida Gateway College is proud to celebrate America’s rich history of Black writers, artists, scientists, and leaders. On Monday, Feb. 1, FGC President Dr. Lawrence Barrett was joined by students, faculty, and staff for a ceremony featuring songs, poetry, and speeches all highlighting the African American experience. Readings included the poetry of Maya Angelou and the writings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In his remarks, Dr. Barrett stressed the important role that educators play in giving students a fuller picture of American History, including the stories, struggles, and contributions of African Americans, whose integral place in our common history has unfortunately been neglected for generations. Barrett closed by issuing the following Proclamation: I, Dr. Lawrence Barrett, President of Florida Gateway College, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby proclaim February 2021, as National African American History Month for Florida Gateway College. I call upon faculty, staff and students of our awesome institution to observe this month with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs that raise awareness of African American history and invite further inquiry into this area of study. Activities scheduled throughout the month of February include: Black History Walk of Fame with informational signs on campus featuring famous African Americans.Black History Program featuring performances by the Sankofa African Family and FGC students, faculty, and staff. Feb. 24 at 11:30 a.m. in the Alfonso Levy Performing Arts Center. Seating limited.
