Florida Gateway College has completed work on a newly renovated pedestrian plaza, as well as exterior upgrades to the Howard Center Gym.

The new pedestrian plaza in front of Buildings 2 and 4 comprises Phase One of a larger project aimed at remedying walkway safety concerns and beautifying the campus for students and the community. The new walkway replaces the previous surface that was showing signs of deterioration, with cracking pavement and tree root damage that presented a possible tripping hazard. The new plaza features newly poured concrete, decorative brickwork, and park benches, creating a safe and open gathering and walking area for FGC students, staff, and visitors.

Future phases of the project will extend the new plaza to Buildings 14 and 15 and will include a new roundabout at the corner of Student Way and Foundation Place, mirroring the style of the current roundabout in front of the FGC Library.

The Howard Center has also received improvements, with new siding around the entire building, fresh paint, and a brand new digital display board at the gym’s entrance.

“The gym exterior was beginning to deteriorate,” said Vice President of Business Services Michelle Holloway, whose division oversees the projects. “This project not only extends the life of the building but modernizes its appearance as well.”

The new digital display will show sports schedules and other college information as visitors enter the gym for basketball games, volleyball games, and events.
