LAKE CITY, Fla. – Florida Gateway College Athletics is excited to announce the return of Women’s Softball.

FGC has a long and proud history in softball, holding seven NJCAA Slow-Pitch National Titles in 1983, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, and 1993 and the NJCAA Division I Fast-Pitch National Championship Title in 2001. The college’s program came to a close when athletics were discontinued following the 2007-2008 academic year. Now, five years after the reestablishment of collegiate sports in 2017, Women’s Softball is returning to FGC to carry on that legacy.

Through a partnership between FGC and the Columbia County Tourism Development Council, all home games and practices will be held at Southside Sports Complex. The program is scheduled to begin operations in Fall of 2022 in preparation for the Spring 2023 season.

FGC will be conducting a nationwide search for a head coach, and applications are currently being submitted to the NJCAA for admission as a Division II team.

Women’s Softball joins a diverse and growing lineup of intercollegiate sports at FGC: Men’s Basketball, Women’s Cross Country, coed Esports, and the newly announced Women’s Flag Football Team. Along with this exciting addition, the college will be bringing the FGC Women’s Volleyball program to a close after five years.

“We are incredibly proud of our volleyball players who have represented FGC exceptionally well over the last five years, both on and off the court and in the classroom,” said FGC President Dr. Lawrence Barrett. “And of our head coach, Clayon Wilson. She came in ready before last season and immediately got to work.

“At this time, we have no current volleyball players planning to return for the 2022-2023 season and no new recruits yet committed. So, now seemed like the right time to make a change and return to where much of the college’s legacy really lies, which is in softball.”
